A reconstruction of the game of jacks – the ancient game of the era of antiquity, played with pebbles, mentioned in Heraclitus's fragments, forms the framework of this work:

“Having gone into the temple of Artemis, he played jacks with the boys. When the people of Ephesus surrounded him, he said to them: ‘Why do you stand and wonder, you good-for-nothings? Is it not better to do this than to manage the affairs of the state with you?'”

Linking the ancient children’s game, Heraclitus’s framents and the present moment may be seen as a return to three different levels: a return to the pre-Socratic teaching, to the starting point, the origin of the civilisation we belong to. Then a return to finding out about things by means of playing, a child-like openness to various experiences, thereby paving the way for – a return to oneself. Playing a game is a way of resisting the petrification of knowledge, the academisation of knowledge, for it is the opposite of mystification. Play forms the basis of avant-garde movements because it is a way of departing from a certain code that functions through all-encompassing rules, universal values, universal ideas. Duchamp says of himeslf that he is a game player. It is a specific view of artisitic freedom: not in the sense of inner necessity, urge to create, but a view of freedom as mental mobility. By linking an antique game, new technologies and avant-garde experience, Jovan Čekić points to a specific connection that opens up a new cycle of reading – a different type of game.
