Sewing Into Walking – Istiklal Caddesi, Istanbul, 1997 (video still)
2 channel video, street sound and Tibetan monk chant, 12:11 mins. (loop)

For Soo-Ja Kim, the processing of fabrics and worn pieces of clothing – sewing, knotting, pressing or folding – is a creative and symbolic act, like meditation: getting closer to the traces left by the collective and the individual life and the stories these fabrics embody.

In her video Sewing into Walking – Istiklal Caddesi, Istanbul, the sculptural process is linked to the moment of “walking”, for clothing is per se incorporated into the process of being on the move. Clothes as used objects not only point to their owners but also to a life lived, to homeland and shelter, but also to their loss. The video was filmed in one of Istanbul’s main streets, the Istiklal Caddesi. With a fixed camera and several hours long, the artist filmed the seemingly endless coming and going of cars and passersby. While on the one side of the double projection you hear the sounds of the street, the other projection side is underlaid with the chants of Tibetan monks in stark contrast to the lively goings-on.

Sewing Into Walking – Istiklal Caddesi, Istanbul, 1997.
