Target Market, 2006

The current project is based on previous experiences, as well as various external influences that could not be avoided – such as the awareness of the existence of the market. The pictures were made on the basis of stills from the documentary “Meeting People Is Easy” by Grant Lee. The actual film is not that important. What attracted me was the atmosphere, a little dirty, the lack of quality, rawness, honesty, simplicity, and also the fact that I could recognise my own story in it. The atmosphere is foreign, a foreign look at one moment or more moments of some reality, which, in this way, through painting, becomes experienced and transformed into a personal impression. By breaking the film – which has its own flow, is finite and exists only at a given moment, only as long as it lasts – into fragments of no specific duration, which are not finite, the film becomes prolonged, that is, a moment is prolonged, the significance of a fragment is increased.

The attitude towards the urban and business is something that is established in the process… The urban landscape speaks of business, corporations, competition – “you are a target market” – and of depression: very often we are forced to deal with things that we do not wish to deal with. It speaks of pressure and alienation, well known for quite a long time, but also of finding one’s own individuality amidst all that, in the global and the faceless, through work (in my case, through work on these pictures). Even though they are small in terms of format, 35 x 40 cm, I needed a lot of time for each of them – over two weeks. This process is very important to me because it places me in the position of someone who experiences a scene for a long time, thereby becoming one with it.

I think that repetition – but not in the true sense of the word, for the pictures are not really the same – creates the impression of distance, and its role is to blunt, to lead to an absence of feeling.

Target Market, 2006.

Slike nastaju po kadrovima iz dokumentarnog filma “Meeting people is easy” autora Grenta Gija (Grant Gee). Sam film nije toliko bitan. Privukla me je atmosfera, pomalo prljava, nedostatak kvaliteta, sirovost, iskrenost, jednostavnost, a takođe i prepoznavanje vlastite priče.
