About  Drummer

In the video Drummer (2003), the face of my sister Regina is lively and full of expression. The idea of drummer came to me in summer 2002 when I spent a weekend in a motel. I saw Regina playing drums after a night of karaoke. I was sitting a metre away of her in a cramped motel room. I saw emotions flying across her face. It inspired me to make a slow-tempo piece of a mute, living face that reflects feelings and thoughts.

In Drummer the subject is filmed frontally. The factor distinguishing it from a photo is the continuous movement. The portrait is a combination of several angles and two projected screens of different size. The juxtaposition of two video images creates a new temporal and philosophical dimension. The images are asynchronous. The loops are of different duration, introducing constant change in the work.

One of the images, The Story of Life, is a blow-up close-up of a face. In the other, The Spirit of Life, the size of the images varies. It is a wide frontal shot that changes into a medium shot. I wanted all the attention to focus on the woman’s face and her character. The only sign of the setting is the carpet under the drum set. The soundtrack is a continuous wall of sound, consisting of drums and an accordion. The tune is a polka, probably of Russian origin. It is catchy and easy to vary. In my mind, the song is expressive of a zeal for and joy of life. Nevertheless, because the sound loop is never-ending, it also has an undertone of nightmarish compulsion.

My aim in Drummer was to create a portrait of a woman and also a metaphor of life. It does not recount the story of her life or her experiences; they can all be read on her face, from its multiplicity. There is the joy and the shadow behind the joy, thoughts with their endless variations of expression. Although the work is a portrait of my sister , it could just as well be a portrait of myself or someone else. My theme in the work is feelings, to make them visible and to convey them to the viewer.

My work has been called anarchistic. I am glad, because the idea has often been in my mind. Usually, the drummer is a solemn young man in black, but Regina is nearly 60, a strong, vibrantly alive woman. I want to break stereotypes and broaden the range of our ideas of woman.

Videla sam kako joj emocije preleću preko lica.
