Dan Perjovschi gained international acclaim in 199 with his spatially expansive work rEST which was staged in the Romanian pavilion at the 49th Biennial in Venice. Perjovschi bedecked the floor of the pavilion with drawings, scribbling and political graffiti which thematicised life in the post-Communist era and the role of East European art in the cultural exchange with the West. Perjovschi´s drawings and caricatures raise awkward issues concerning post-Socialist identity, whilst, at the same time, rejecting in ambivalent fashion the West’s interpretation of East European art as historically obsolete. [...] For the exhibition project “In the Gorges of the Balkans” Perjovschi carried forward his approach into the public space of Kassel, adopting a critical stance by showing his works not in the exhibition rooms, but at selected “action sites” in the urban space beyond the confines of the exhibition. [...] His motifs are drawn from the global political situation, East-West issues and the role of the artists within a system of interrelated political structures – which has grown in complexity since the fall of the Wall. Bridging the divide between action art, performance and art in public space, Perjovschi´s contribution serves as a model for visual action in urban space and for the new role of the artist which, in Perjovschi´s view, lies in both critically questioning the venue and the artistic self-conception of the exhibition, and ensuring that any intervention achieves maximum effect with minimum input of resources.

Dan Perjovši zadobio je priznanja u međunarodnim okvirima 199(?). godine svojim prostorno ekspanzivnim radom rEST, postavljenim u Rumunskom paviljonu na 49. bijenalu u Veneciji. Perjovši je prekrio pod paviljona crtežima, škrabotinama i političkim grafitima koji su tematizovali život u postkomunističkoj eri i ulogu istočnoevropske umetnosti u okviru kulturne razmene sa Zapadom. Perjovši svojim crtežima i karikaturama pokreće neugodna pitanja u vezi sa postsocijalističkim identitetom, a istovremeno na ambivalentan način odbacuje zapadna tumačenja istočnoevropske umetnosti kao istorijski zastarela. [...] Za potrebe projekta izložbe ''U gudurama Balkana'', Perjovši je svoj pristup preneo u javni prostor Kasela, zauzimajući kritički stav tako što svoja dela nije prikazivao u izložbenim salama već na odabranim ''akcionim lokacijama'' u urbanom prostoru izvan okvira izložbe. [...] On svoje motive preuzima iz globalne političke situacije, pitanja vezanih za odnos između Istoka i Zapada, kao i za ulogu umetnika u sistemu međusobno povezanih političkih struktura – koji je postao kompleksniji od pada Berlinskog zida. Premošćavajući jaz između akcione umetnosti, performansa i umetnosti u javnom prostoru, Perjovšijev doprinos služi kao model vizuelne akcije u urbanom prostoru i nove uloge umetnika, koja se, po mišljenju Perjovšija, sastoji u tome da kritički preispituje kako izložbeni prostor tako i umetnikovo sopstveno poimanje izložbe, te da se postara za to da svaka intervencija postigne maksimalan mogući efekat uz minimalno ulaganje resursa.
