“How do I see and feel this world and how do I transform those ideas into a work of art?”

Julio & Lupita is a work about a man and his love, his desire and his longing and it’s about a woman and her contradictory need to be at the same time a desirable object and a respectable person.

The man appearing in the video is the Colombian street artist Julio Diaz, who supports himself in New York by dancing with Lupita and other life-size women dolls of his making.

I asked Julio to do his usual act in front of my camera, which I then shot from several angles. The small theater was a perfect location to shoot this weird performance that represents something recognizable, but then it’s not anything exactly.

The music is a slowed-down piece of merengue combined with ambient sounds of people and space. I wanted to create a sentimental and yet a macabre feeling that I sensed when seeing how the audience reacted on Julio’s’ show.

During his regular performance at New York subway stations, there is always a lot of ambience noise, Julio’s portable audio system is screaming and the audience is watching the show with amazement, and there is always a guy who will whistle loudly during the high points of the show, that means when Julio is bending the doll into the more suggestive positions.

There was no script or a clear plan when making the video, just that strong feeling that I experienced when hearing guys whistling to the doll, responding to it like to a woman. Whistling at a woman is a raw “invitation” based on power, which creates at the same time a threatening and a flattering feeling. It’s a sexual invitation that a woman is not supposed to accept.
