Jalal Toufic or the Principle of Deception

Jalal Toufic refutes all conventional clichés associated with an artist from Lebanon. The seemingly obligatory theme of the civil war does not form the general canon of his output neither does he seek to ignite the colours in the candescent light of the Orient in his work or immerse them in dense black and white. And yet the history of the Middle East, with its intrinsic contradictions and the fabled beauty of the landscape is ever present.

Toufic’s conceptual approach between fantasy and the notion of reality is subjective, full of confusion and erudition/concentrated knowledge. But appearances are deceptive. He engages the viewer in sophisticated game of deception, performing a precarious balancing-act between reality and fiction. He undermines the viewer’s conviction that what he sees is authentic, dupes him just when he trusts in the integrity of his visual perception. Jalal Toufic decodes his and our notions of the Orient – and integrates them into his subjective view of things. It is no coincidence that he dedicated to Gilles Deleuze und Felix Guattari his series Minor Art: Conceptual Film and Video Posters, which were created between 2000 and 2005.

Notwithstanding all intellectuality and erudition//concentrated knowledge, Jalal Toufic never tires of spinning yarns. His message is the image, and he is ever seeking to resolve the recurrent question of how to generate subjectivity. Is the image we see the image we think we see? Rather than furnishing answers Jalal Toufic allows the images to talk for themselves.

Do we see what we see or see what we want to see?

Džalal Tufik tumači svoje i naše predstave o Orijentu, unoseći svoje subjektivno viđenje stvari. Nimalo slučajno, svoju seriju Minor Art: Conceptual Film and Video Posters, nastalu između 2000. i 2005. godine, posvećuje Žilu Delezu (Gilles Delleuze) i Feliksu Gatariju (Felix Guattari).
