Film Z32 focuses on a young, Israeli ex-soldier from an elite unit in the Isreali Defence Force, who confesses and reconstructs the killing event for his girlfriend and the viewers. This young man as anonymous confessor reveals the contradictions between a soldier’s adrenaline-driven experience of real combat and a civilian’s need for forgiveness. Can a film/could a cinema become a place of hiding for a war criminal? This is one of the questions that the film director is asking. Mograbi’s ingenious film, a self described “musical documentary tragedy,” leads us through a maze of national duty, admissions of guilt, desire for forgiveness and a soldier’s reality – issues rarely discussed in a public forum of this nature.
