In 1970 the Stanford Prison Experiment was conceived by Philip Zimbardo. The experiment studied the confrontation of a group of participants with the reality of prison. In his video Repetition, Artur Żmijewski restages and documents Zimbardo’s prison experiment. Żmijewski placed an advertisement in the newspaper, offering readers the opportunity to take part in an experiment for hourly pay. The experiment continued for seven days, and as with the Zimbardo case, the participants were randomly selected to perform the roles of prisoners or guards. Żmijewski’s re-enactment has a symbolic theatrical dimension: whereby an intricate, often emotional event is encoded into an easily digestible product and provided with a local rationalisation – a process that makes for an illusion of order. The re-enactment of Zimbardo’s experiment dissociates the past from any sentiment in an attempt to rejuvenate reality, which has crumbled at this point: occurring outside time, as it were.
